Motif map — Becoming Hamlet

The audience as orchestra: motifs the audience sounds across the evening. These are the recurring words and themes that run through the play. Throughout the show, the cast sounds these terms, the audience may notice them and speak them aloud. Some motifs are tracked as a single word, others by a phrase form that carries the motif — “Oh God, a beast!”, “The play's the thing!”, “To die, to sleep”. The play runs top to bottom on the right; the motif words sit in the column on the left. A solid blue dot is a moment the house already picks it up; a solid gold dot is a strong echo cue — the motif is already alive by then; a faint ring is every other place the word lands, open for an echo.
